Located in Saint-Maurice-ès-Allier in Auvergne, Benoit Rosenberger, is the owner of Verre de Terre. Born in Sancerre, Benoit, with a past as a computer programmer, decides to move to Auvergne where chance encounters with local vignerons like Frédéric Gounan soon convince him to start making wine. It cultivates only three hectares of Gamay d’Auvergne from 50-80 year old vineyards, divided into small plots on gentle hills at about 350-500 meters above sea level. The vines are hand-tended and Benoit avoids the use of chemicals, using teas and infusions like dandelion, nettle and pine to take care of the plants. The soil is mainly basalt, which together with the volcanic sand and granite, makes the wines agile, fragrant and distinctly mineral.
